Classroom Procedures
Bellwork: At the sound of the bell at the beginning of each class, you must immediately get to work on the assignment listed on the board or overhead. This work is to be done in your bellwork notebook. You are to leave the notebook in class so as to not lose it. I will be marking your bellwork. Bellwork is to be done silently so that I can take attendance.
Late Arrivals: School rules do not allow for late arrivals to class. Students who are late will have their names given to the main office. Demerit points will also be given (1 point per minute late). If you arrive late for first period, you must have a note in your agenda from the main office.
Absence: Should you miss a class, it is your responsibility to find out what you missed, either by asking a friend or visiting my website. You are responsible for completing missed classwork and homework.
Finishing Assigned Work Early: You should always have a book with you to read silently if you finish your work early. Depending on the circumstances, I may also allow you to use the classroom computer or play one of the games I have in my game drawer. I will also always have Sudoku puzzles on hand. Under no circumstance should you interrupt the work of the other students.
Restroom: Restroom breaks are to be made at recess and at lunch. Only in extreme emergencies will you be allowed to leave the classroom for a restroom break. Leaving the class requires a note in your agenda, and this interrupts the class.
Classroom Environment: We are very fortunate to be working in a relatively new wing of the school. Therefore, writing on or defacing the desks will not be tolerated. It also means absolutely no food or drinks (with the exception of bottled water) or gum. At the end of class, please tuck your chair in and pick up any papers that have fallen on the floor. Clean and new classrooms are much more comfortable to work in—let’s please keep it clean!
IPODs and Cell Phones: School rules state that IPODs and cell phones are not permitted in classrooms. They must be kept in your locker. If you are caught with one in class, it will be confiscated for a period of one week.
Group Work: You will be sitting in an assigned group of 3 or 4. This will be your group for at least a month at a time. You will work cooperatively with this group, helping each other when needed. Occasionally, you will also be assigned group projects.
During class time, your group will receive checkmarks for following classroom rules. Five checkmarks will get your group one point. These points will carry over to the next class, and once every term, the group with the most points will receive a reward.
Examples of group rewards:
20-30 minutes at the end of class to use the computers or do other work in the library
Homework-off coupon
One member of each group will be assigned group leader. It is this person’s responsibility to collect and hand in papers, to make sure that the group is keeping the classroom clean, and to encourage group members to stay on task and follow the classroom rules.
Individual rewards will still be given occasionally, but our main focus will be on group cooperation.
Homework: Homework is assigned daily. Success in math comes with hard work and practice. It is therefore necessary to work on math each night. Time will be given in class to begin the assigned work, but work must be completed by the following class. Homework will be checked and graded often.
Class Tests: You will have your parent or guardian sign all class tests (and some assignments/quizzes). I will collect these once signed.
Agenda: You will bring your agenda to class every period.
Fire Drill: When the fire bell rings, leave all books on your desk and quietly line up two-by-two at the classroom door. Two people will be assigned to close all windows, and another two people will be assigned to lead the class outside. The teacher will follow the class at the end of the line. When the teacher gives the go-ahead, exit the classroom and exit the doors to the right. Walk to the lower football field and line up silently while the teacher calls attendance. Listen for your name and respond “here”. When it is time to go back inside, go quietly, and once again, two-by-two. It is absolutely necessary to be silent during fire drills.
Final Procedure: You will have an enjoyable and successful school year.
